Featured in this cover of Demis Roussos’ disco ballad, “Midnight Is The Time I Need You,” is Els Himma: one of the first and most versatile jazz virtuosos of Soviet Estonia. The self-taught singer achieved A-category artist status, being well-versed in bossa, Latin, pop and disco. In the 1960s she participated at local jazz festivals, and in the 70s took stage in the wider USSR. She was also the head soloist at the prestigious Viru Music Hall, where she put together a program which included the likes of Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. As Estonia was the westernmost part of the Soviet Union, Swedish and Finnish radio waves made it here with music from the West, and for local radio purposes, covers of these songs were permitted to be recorded. Although Himma got radio airplay, and her radiant persona shined in musical movies, TV-performances and live concerts, it wasn’t until 2010 that she self-released her first solo album.
