about

This is a soulful cover version of the folk-rock outfit America’s “Three Roses,” and is sung by Marju Kuut (later Maryn E. Coote). Mostly known as a singer, Maryn is also a composer, producer and a DJ. She debuted at Tallinn Jazz Festival in 1963. Shortly after, Juri Vihharev, the Leningrad-based pianist and correspondent for DownBeat, invited her to perform all over Soviet Russia. Vihharev referred to Marju Kuut as the “best jazz singer in the USSR”. Before emigrating to Sweden in the 80s and later the U.S, Maryn had recorded over 500 songs. After eloping, her music was considered taboo by the Soviet authorities. Records were pulled from stores, and tapes removed from the Estonian Radio archive. Luckily they weren’t destroyed, but preserved in the forbidden section. Maryn’s later works in lo-fi, synth-pop, boogie and funk (oft in collaboration with her son, Uku Kuut), have received a warm reception, since being released by Peoples Potential Unlimited.
