In his teenage years, Gunnar Graps drummed for the beat music group Mikronid. In 1976 Graps put together Magnetic Band, which was influenced by jazz, rock, soul and reggae. From the LP “Roosid Papale” (1982), we’ve picked the cowbell-driven funky soul tune “Finding” (tr.). The gypsy punk music artist, Gogol Bordello, sampled this track in “Did It All.” In the late 1980s, Graps became the godfather of heavy metal in the Soviet Union, baptized “Iron Man” for his style and stage presence. While “black music” was favored at the time due to Moscow’s intention to seem as a defender of the repressed afro-americans, “white music” such as punk, rock and heavy were frowned upon. As Graps turned more into this direction, the band got banned for ‘bad artistic behaviour’ and ‘rude behaviour in hotels.’ Arguably the best drummer of Soviet Estonia, he also tried to make it in US yet failed to cope with the new trends in music.
