about

Collage provides the opener, a folk-funk track entitled “Forest In Between The Maidens” (tr.), from their grooviest LP, “Käokiri”(1978). They were the first Estonian band to incorporate elements of traditional music in pop. Specifically, they used "runosong," a singing technique with chants and repetition, as a dialogue between the lead singer and choir. Collage mixed this with jazz-funk music. This was quite unique not only in Soviet Estonia and the wider USSR, but also worldwide. In the 1970s, Aarne Vahuri became the leader of the group, taking over full writing duties for the band. Lea Gabral was the lead singer for this track, and throughout the discography. One of the group’s singers, Anne Erm, later a central figure of the local jazz community, has named Brasil ‘66, Les Double Six and The Swingle Sisters among the influences at the time. With the re-release of their albums by Hyper Records, Collage has received its well-earned praise from underground music lovers communities across the globe.
