about

This blues-funk masterpiece is the closest thing to Isaac Hayes to ever come out of Estonia. Brothers Tarmo and Toomas Urb are more widely known as world and folk music purveyors as well as actors. The duo fled to the US, after Tarmo was tipped off by his personal KGB agent (assigned to follow him) about an upcoming arrest. Apparently, following Tarmo had enlightened the agent enough to make him want to save the artist. Before the escape, Urbs recorded the track “Thunder In the Mirror” (tr.), inspired by an Artur Alliksaar poem. Loaded with decadent sentiment, the lyrics describe debauchery in a bar saloon. The sax parts are played by the legendary Lembit Saarsalu. Backing is the punk-rock group Vanemõde. The band’s guitarist at the time turned up for the session without sleeping, and still tipsy from a wedding. So the riff was played by Hendrik Sal-Saller instead, a later rockstar in Estonia.
